Box Score Jacksonville, Fla. ? Six of the nine Hatters starters came through with a multi-hit performances leading Stetson to a 13-4 victory over North Florida Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville. Catcher Josh Clendenin (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. He also had an excellent series going 5-for-8 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Today's win ended a 7-game losing streak for the Hatters.
Stetson used today's first inning to take out its recent frustrations by scoring 8 runs on 7 hits. Casey Frawley (New Haven, Ct.) led off with a solid single up the middle to get things started. Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) singled to left field and Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) walked to load the bases with one out. Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.) stepped in and delivered a 2-RBI single that scored Frawley and Bass. Crittenden moved up to second on the throw home. When the UNF catcher tried to catch Crittenden sliding into second, Bass scrambled home for the third run scored on the play. Next up for the Hatters was Brian Pruitt (Miami, Fla.) who immediately singled to left field moving Crittenden to third. Starting catcher Clendenin followed with a 2-RBI single to right-center and Stetson led 5-0. With two outs in the inning freshman Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) delivered a single up the middle moving Clendenin to second. Leadoff hitter Frawley made his second appearance at the plate in the first inning, then early in the count smashed a deep drive over the McDonald's banner on the wall in left-center for his 4th home run of the season. The eight runs were the most Stetson had scored any inning this season.
North Florida got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Preston Hale (Lakeland, Fla.) delivered a 2-RBI double after Mauldin had allowed a pair of 2-out singles. They added another run in the 4th on a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-3.
Stetson added a run in a 5th inning that began with a one-out double to deep centerfield by Crittenden. He moved to second on a ground out, and then scored on a solid RBI single to left field by Clendenin. UNF answered with its own run in the bottom of the inning.
Stetson put the game away with four runs in the top of the 8th inning. Erich Holland (Louisville, Ky.) led off with a single to left field. With one out Frawley picked up his 3rd hit of the game, a double down the left field line moving Holland to third. Next up was Josh Davis (Chambersburg, Pa.) who singled through the hole on the left side scoring Holland. Frawley was thrown out at home on the play and Davis moved to second. Crews followed with a single to left filed scoring Davis. Bass continued the rally with another single to left scoring Crews from second. The final run of the 8th, and of the game, scored when Crittenden hit a high fly to right field that was dropped for an error. Bass had stolen second base early in the count and then scored on the error.
Starting pitcher Andy Mauldin (Gainesville, Fla.) threw 5 1/3 innings giving up 4 runs, 8 hits and striking out 2 batters. He picked up the win raising his record to 4-1 on the season. David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, struck out 3 batters and surrendered no runs to pick up his first save of the season.
Stetson is now 16-24 overall and 7-14 in A-Sun play while UNF dropped to 23-18 and 13-11. The Hatters will return to the road to begin the upcoming week.
