Women's XC Wins Embry-Riddle Asics Classic; Men Place 2nd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Led by three Hatters in the top five, the Stetson women's cross country team won the Embry-Riddle Asics Classic on Saturday morning. The men's squad also performed well, placing second out of four teams in competition.

Once again it was freshman Amanda Spring setting the pace for the Stetson women, taking third overall with a time of 20:03.90 on the five kilometer course. Fellow freshman Samantha Hicks wasn't far behind though. She placed fourth less than five second later, crossing the line in 20:08.46.

Sophomore Adrienne DeVita took fifth place, running a time of 20:31.55. Freshman Daniella Godenzi was next to cross the line for Stetson, recording a time of 20:58.35 to place ninth overall. The fifth finisher for the Hatters was senior Sabrina Guzsvany, placing 11th with a time of 21:08.54.

Normally only a team's top five finishers count towards the team's overall score. After tallying up the total scores of Stetson and Embry-Riddle's competing top-fives, it was a 32 to 32 tie. The rule is that the sixth finisher becomes the tie-breaker.

Stetson's freshman Clarissa Consol was the one who got it done for the Hatters on Saturday, edging out Embry-Riddle's Stephany Valesco by just over one second to take 12th place and give Stetson the victory. Console finished in 21:23.69, while Valesco recorded a time of 21:24.86.

The Stetson men place second out four teams, falling to the host Eagles by a score of 26 to 59. Senior Andrew Epifanio led the Hatters with a fourth place finish, crossing the line in 27:28.01 on the eight kilometer course.

Freshman Joe Beery was the next Hatter to finish, placing eighth overall with a time of 28:12.26. Sophomore Andrew Townes took 18th in a time of 29:51.04, while sophomore Cody Malloy crossed the line in 30:23.59 to place 22nd. Sophomore Ryan Hodgins rounded out the scoring for Stetson, placing 24th with a time of 30:45.71.

The Stetson cross country teams will next compete at the FLRunners Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27 in Titusville, Fla.
