Charleston, S.C. -- No. 9 Stetson saw its school-record 11-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of No. 7 Georgia State by a margin of 4-1 Sunday at the Creekside sand volleyball facility. However, the Hatters bounced back to defeat the College of Charleston 5-0 in the second match of the day.
The Hatters (14-2) completed the two-day CofC Sand Classic with a 3-1 record.
"I felt against Georgia state we didn't take advantage of our opportunities," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said. "They were the more aggressive team today. I was glad we finished the day with a 5-0 sweep against Charelston. It was a strong tournament weekend. I saw some good things, and I saw things that we have to work on before we compete this week against UNF and Mercer."
Stetson's lone victory against Georgia State came at the No. 1 seed as Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett defeated Milani Pickering and Majda Dostalova 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-10).
The Panthers (15-1) won at the No. 2-5 seeds to hand Stetson just its second loss of the year. Both setbacks have come to Top 10 ranked opponents.
In Stetson's second match, all five seeds were victorious against the College of Charleston (1-8). The No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 seeds each claimed 2-0 victories, while the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds battled for three-set wins.
Stetson will return home to face UNF in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Hatters will also host Mercer for two more contests at 10 a.m. Saturday. If Stetson wins at least three of those four matches, the Hatters will clinch the regular season Atlantic Sun title and the No. 1 seed for the A-Sun Championship.
