No. 15 Towson Too Much for Stetson, 17-3

DeLAND—Lindsay Summers scored a pair of goals for Stetson but No. 15 Towson was too much as the Tigers downed the Hatters, 17-3, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Playing their first of two straight games against Top 15 teams, the Hatters (3-3) saw their three-game winning streak snapped. The Tigers (6-0) dominated the game, out-shooting Stetson 40-11 and forcing the Hatters into 21 turnovers.

“I think there were moments where we played really well and showed that, at times, we can compete against top programs,” said assistant coach Maggie Smith. “Our biggest message at the end of the game was making sure we believe that we can do it for a full 60 minutes, and not just five or 10 at a time.”

Towson took control of the match early, scoring six goals before the Hatters found the net. Summers scored the first of her goals with 16:52 left in the first half to make it a 6-1 game.

Towson led 11-1 at halftime and increased their lead to 16-1 before the Hatters scored again. Hallie Merz scored with 13:21 to play, and Summers scored the game's final goal with 6:21 left.

Smith thinks Friday's loss will help Stetson on Sunday when No. 14 Boston College invades the ATC.

“We can pull a lot from this game for Sunday”, she said. “If we hadn't dug ourselves a really big hole at 6-0 tonight, we might have a different result going into halftime. We have to come out on Sunday and compete in the first 10 minutes and see where it goes from there.”

Stetson and B.C. are scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start.
