NORFOLK, Va.—Paul Ladwig made 10 saves for Stetson as the Hatters escaped Old Dominion's ODU Soccer Complex with a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Ladwig, a senior, was a brick wall for the Hatters. He faced 26 shots in 110 minutes but allowed just one goal to the Monarchs (1-0-1), as Stetson (1-0-1) finished a successful season-opening road trip.
Stetson struck first on Sunday. Sophomore Ian McCauley scored his first goal of the season in the 6th minute in a unique fashion. Luke Ferreira and Gabriel Diniz – who hooked up for Stetson's overtime winner on Friday at VCU – orchestrated a double-header to set up McCauley for an opportunity from close range and he found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Hatters held the 1-0 advantage until the 33rd minute when Cole Stringer tied the game with a header off a corner kick.
The contest remained tied for the next 77 minutes until the final whistle blew.
Statistically speaking, ODU dominated the match. The Monarchs were plus-20 on shots and held a 19-7 advantage on corner kicks. Half of Stetson's shots were on-goal, and the Hatters' defense made a pair of saves to help Ladwig.
Stetson opens its 2016 home schedule when the Hatters host Georgia Southern, 7 p.m., Friday at the ATC.
