Travis Sandlant Named Women's Tennis Head Coach

Travis Sandlant has been named as women's tennis head coach at Stetson, Athletic Director Jeff Altier announced today.

Sandlant comes to Stetson after spending nine highly successful seasons at former Atlantic Sun Conference rival East Tennessee State, including the last six as women's head coach. Sandlant guided the Buccaneers to three NCAA Tournaments (2011, 2014, 2016) as head coach and to one trip (2009) as an assistant coach, winning three conference tournament and regular-season championships in the process.

"I commend the search committee for adhering to our mission of hiring coaches that enhance Stetson's championship culture," said Altier. "This culture requires that our coaches have an uncompromising commitment to winning within and outside of competition. Travis is a champion and has taken multiple teams to championship level performance at East Tennessee State. He has done this while the students have also accomplished in the classroom and in the community.  I look forward to working with Travis to put our women's tennis program at the top of the ASUN."

The 2013 ASUN Coach of the Year, Sandlant owns a 140-58 career dual match record. He coached seven players to ITA national individual rankings during his tenure at ETSU, including a team-high ranking of No. 51. He has earned eight victories over ITA-ranked opponents and led the Bucs to a high ranking of No. 61.

"I've coached against Stetson many times over the years and I've always thought that the campus is beautiful and the town looks great," Sandlant said. "Everyone has been friendly even though we were a rival. Those things attracted me. When the opportunity came about I thought it would be a great move to make. I have a lot of experience in the Atlantic Sun Conference and I wanted to get back in the league and try to get back to the top again. Stetson has everything we'll need to be a dominant force in the conference."

With first-hand knowledge of the Hatters and the University itself, Sandlant is looking forward to growing the Stetson program.

"Stetson is in a prime location in Florida and that should bring top athletes from all over country and the world," Sandlant said. "Academically it's a very appealing school. There is so much potential at Stetson. I'm looking forward to taking the program to the heights it deserves."

As a collegiate player Sandlant was a three-time All-American at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., as well as two-time Appalachian Athletic Conference player of the year. He later played at ETSU and helped lead the Buccaneers to the 2007 ASUN championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

A native of Werribee, Australia, Sandlant studied and played at the prestigious Australia Institute of Sport, and was Australian High School champion as a junior.

"I want thank Jeff Altier, Dr. Mike Bitter, P.J. Moses and Alicia Queally for giving me the opportunity to coach at Stetson," Sandlant said. "I feel honored that they've chosen me to lead the women's tennis program and I look forward to working with them and representing the green and white."

He earned Bachelor's ('07, Interdisciplinary Studies) and Master's ('09, Sports Management) degrees from ETSU.
