Hatters Edged by FAU in Season Debut

DeLAND—Stetson pushed Florida Atlantic to the brink on Friday but the Hatters came up just short in a 4-3 season-opening loss at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
 
Stetson started slowly in both singles and doubles play, but rebounded each time to make things close. First-year head coach Travis Sandlant was disappointed with the ultimate outcome, but pleased with his team's resilience.
 
"It's pleasing to see that we had some fight in us today," Sandlant said. "I just think we really missed in the doubles. That was our opportunity to put a scare in them straight away. We could have prepared better, but we only started practicing on Tuesday. We can make a million excuses but they played better than us today, and that's that."
 
After the Owls won doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 to clinch the first point, FAU opened singles play by winning matches at Nos. 2 and 1 for a 3-0 lead.
 
Arijana Korac put the Hatters on the board with a straight set victory at No. 3, and freshman Lucie Renault followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 as Stetson closed to within 3-2.
 
Freshman Sofia Ferding earned her first collegiate dual match win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5, tying the match at three all.
 
The decisive match was on Court 6, and FAU's Naiya Owen out-lasted freshman Danielle Peele in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, as the Owls earned their first team victory of the season.
 
Stetson next welcomes UCF to Mandy Stoll, 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28.
