There were a lot of positives to come out of Stetson's road win over Drake on Saturday, and one of those was the play of junior linebacker
Colby Duncan, who was named Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the game.
Â
Duncan made big play after big play for the Hatters during the win, especially in the second half after fellow linebacker
Jamieson Craske went down with an injury. He is the second Stetson player to earn PFL defensive honors this year, joining with defensive back
Reggie Gantt.
Â
Duncan is also the fourth different Stetson player to earn the award from the PFL going back to 2013 – joining with Gantt,
Donald Payne (six times) and
Davion Belk (once).
Â
Among Duncan's game-high 10 total tackles were potential TD saving stops in the first quarter and third quarter (twice), a stop on fourth down in the fourth quarter at the Stetson 33 and a forced fumble later in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over at the Stetson 24.
Â
It was the fourth double-figure tackle games for Duncan in his Stetson career.
Â
Not only was he the PFL Defensive POW, he was the Hatters' defensive player of the week as well as the Stetson scout team defense player of the week. Duncan was also an honorable mention for the FCS Defensive Player of the week award.
Â
Other players recognized by Stetson coaches for their play in the game on Saturday included senior quarterback
Colin McGovern, who completed 29 of his 44 pass attempts (.659) against Drake for 271 yards and three touchdowns despite getting sacked three times, roughed twice and hurries three times.
Â
Freshman QB
Colin Wray, who doubles as the Hatters' long snapper, was a big reason the Stetson kicking game had tremendous success against a Drake team that came into the contest with six blocked kicks this year. Wray was the Hatters' special teams player of the week. He will have the honor of wearing jersey number 37 for the game this weekend against Jacksonville.
Â
Sophomore lineman
Peter Greubel, the only Iowan on the Stetson roster, saw his first significant playing time of the year at Drake and made it count with his level of physical play. Greubel played 74 of the 79 offensive snaps at left tackle.
Â
Freshman receiver
Jake Navin earned recognition for his work in practice last week, earning scout team offensive player of the week.
Â
Junior receiver
Steven Burdette, who scored the winning touchdown, one of two in the game, received the Stetson Hammer on Friday night prior to the game and will decide who to pass that honor to for this weeks' game.
Â
The Hatters will return to Spec Martin Memorial Stadium this Saturday to face in-state rival Jacksonville, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. It is the annual "pink" game for the Hatters in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Â
The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
