Hatters Open Fall Season at Georgia Tech

Stetson men's rowing opened its fall season on Saturday against Georgia Tech, and the Hatters came away with an impressive victory.

Racing at historic Lake Lanier Olympic Park in suburban Atlanta, the Hatters and Yellowjackets competed in a total of five time-trial races on the twisty, 3-mile course.

Stetson came out on top in the Varsity 8, an impressive result for a boat with a freshman coxswain and four freshmen rowers.

The other races didn't go Stetson's way. While the Second Varsity 8 didn't have a strong first race, the Hatters made some changes and were far more competitive in the final race of the day.

The Hatters sent a freshman-laden team to compete against the more experienced Yellowjackets, and assistant coach Ethan Shoemaker was pleased with the overall results.

"This was a good early season test for us," Shoemaker said. "Georgia Tech is a well-coached team, with some significant depth. While we came away with a victory in the first 8, the real point was to be tested and see where we need to improve across the roster. That happened today and the team is eager to work on those areas this upcoming week in practice."

The Hatters compete next at the Hatter Invitational on October 27 at Lake Beresford.
