After spending a week on the road, the Hatters return home Tuesday afternoon for a single game against Florida State before opening another four-game road swing.
Â
The game at Melching Field is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start and is scheduled to broadcast on the new ESPN+ with Evan Weston and Robert Goldberg on the call. ESPN+ is a subscription-based service, similar to Netflix, which costs $4.99 per month.
Â
The Hatters dropped three of five games on the road last week, including both games in Tallahassee against Florida State. Entering that two-game series Stetson pitchers had allowed eight home runs all season. The Seminoles doubled that total in two games, including a record tying seven in the second game of the series. It was the most home runs allowed in one game by Stetson pitching since April 7, 2015, at Florida.
Â
In the first game against FSU the Hatters managed just one hit against the Seminoles' pitching duo of Andrew Karp and C.J. Van Eyk. Both hurlers followed up with starts against Boston College in an FSU sweep.
Â
Unlike last week, FSU comes into Tuesday's game riding a five-game win streak. The Seminoles are averaging 10.8 runs per game over the last five with a .304 team batting average.
Â
Stetson has not enjoyed the same level of success over the last five games, batting just .209 as a team with 22 runs scored - with 19 of those coming in two games.
Â
The Hatters have now lost 15 consecutive games to the Seminoles overall, which is the longest streak in the history of the series. Overall, Stetson has lost 32 of its last 34 games against FSU.
Â
The 15 straight losses to FSU is the third longest skid to one opponent in program history. Stetson lost 17 straight to Rollins from 1957-61, which came after a 16-game skid to the Tars from 1938-50.
Â
The last Stetson win over FSU came in DeLand during the 2012 season. The Hatters knocked off the then No. 1 ranked team in the country 6-5 that night.
Â
There is a two-game discrepancy in the all-time series record between Stetson and the Seminoles. The FSU record book shows the program starting in 1948, but Stetson records show two games during the 1904 season between the Hatters and "Florida State College", with one of those games in Tallahassee. The teams split the two games in 1904, with both winning 3-2 on their home field.
Â
Stetson coach
Steve Trimper is 0-9 in his career against FSU. He was 0-7 during the 2011 and 2012 seasons during his time at the University of Maine.
Â
Junior
Joey Gonzalez is scheduled to make the start for Stetson on Tuesday. Gonzalez has been the Hatters' starter in three of the teams' eight shutouts this year. He has now made four career appearances against FSU, including a start last week. He has worked a total of 10.1 innings against the Seminoles, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with 10 walks and 7 strikeouts. He walked a career-high six in five innings of work in the Hatters' 4-0 loss to the 'Noles last week.
Â
SU freshman left-hander Austin Pollock will get his second shot at the Hatters after allowing four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work in last Wednesday's game.
Â
The Hatters will open another four-game road trip on Friday in Jacksonville when Stetson squares off against North Florida in the first of a three-game ASUN weekend series. Stetson will then travel to Miami for a game against FIU next Tuesday before the next home series, against Jacksonville May 4-6.
