Hatters Open Final Week With Showdown at Miami

Miami, Fla. - It has been a magical season so far for the Stetson Hatters, who will look to extend the nation's longest active win streak on Tuesday night in Coral Gables against a Miami squad that has won eight straight and is playing for its post-season life.

The game from Mark Light Field will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra with an earlier than originally planned start time of 6 p.m.

Stetson will put a 10-game win streak on the line against a Hurricanes team that has won eight straight. The Hatters (40-11) have already wrapped up the top spot in next week's ASUN Tournament and have climbed to a season-high No. 7 in the most recent college baseball RPI. Miami (25-25) is No. 59 in the RPI and is in need of a continued strong finish to finds its way back into the NCAA Tournament.

This will be the first meeting between Stetson and Miami since the 2016 NCAA Coral Gables Regional. The Hatters dropped a pair of games to the "Canes that year, both by the score of 4-2. Stetson has not won a game in Coral Gables since 2001, taking a 10-9 win over Miami that year.

Miami owns an overall series lead over the Hatters of 113-44, including a 72-18 advantage in Coral Gables.

Stetson is ranked in all five national polls again this week after joining them last week for the first time since the 2011 season. The Hatters are ranked highest by D1Baseball.com at No. 13. The other polls have Stetson ranked 20 (Baseball America), 15 (NCBWA), 17 (USA Today) and 23 (Collegiate Baseball).

During the 10-game win streak the Stetson pitching staff has dominated. The Hatters have allowed just 2.4 runs per game with a 2.15 ERA while holding opponents to a .202 batting average with just nine extra-base hits. In the most recent series against FGCU the Stetson pitchers held the Eagles to a .206 average with a 2.33 ERA. The Hatters recorded 32 strikeouts in that series, running the total over the last 10 games to 104.

With 534 strikeouts this season, the Hatters need just five more to break the school record for the third consecutive year. In 2016 the Stetson staff set the mark with 485 Ks, a number that was bested last year with 538.

This is the first time the Hatters have hit 40 wins in a season since 2011 and the 10th time in program history with 40 or more wins in a season. Other 40+ win seasons were: 1982 (40), 1984 (46), 1996 (42), 2000 (48), 2001 (43), 2002 (42), 2003 (41), 2007 (42) and 2011 (43).

Freshman Chris Gonzalez, a Miami native, is expected to make his second start of the year on Tuesday. He made his only other start this year against USF on April 11, allowing a run on three hits over 2.2 innings of work. He will likely be the first of a number of Hatters hurlers who will see action in the game.

Stetson clinched no worse than a share of the 2018 ASUN regular season championship, the first since 2011. The Hatters found out they had clinched the No. 1 overall seed for the ASUN Tournament while sitting on a bus in a mall parking lot in Miami on Sunday. The Hatters clinched the top seed and no worse than a tie for the league title when NJIT defeated Kennesaw State.

Junior right-hander Logan Gilbert set a new Stetson record for strikeouts in a season on Friday. He currently has 134 Ks on the year, two better than the former school record of 132 set by Lenny DiNardo in 2000. The former Hatter, and Boston Red Sox World Series champion, gave Gilbert a call to congratulate him following the Hatters' win over FGCU.

Gilbert's strikeouts this year put him on pace to perhaps have the 2nd greatest strikeout season in ASUN history. With at least three starts remaining this spring, Gilbert needs just 25 Ks to move into second on the ASUN season strikeout list. He would need a deep run in the post-season to approach the league record of 220 Ks set by Evan Thomas of FIU in 1996.

The last player to record 200 strikeouts in a season was Trevor Bauer of UCLA with 203 in 2011. The NCAA record for strikeouts in a season is 234 by Derek Tatsuno of Hawai'i in 1979.

Senior right hander Brooks Wilson made sure of the win in for Gilbert on Friday, picking up his 18th save of the year to tie the school and ASUN mark set by Stetson's Robbie Powell in 2012. Wilson then established a new mark with a save in the first game of Saturday's double-header.

Wilson's next save will move him in to a tie, with 13 other players, for 12th on the NCAA single-season saves list. He will become the 25th player in NCAA history with 20 saves in a season.

Wilson turned in another strong weekend in helping the Hatters to a road sweep of FGCU. He had an RBI single in the series opener that, upon video review, should have been ruled a three-run home run after hitting the net behind the right field fence at Sawnson Stadium. He had a two-run double in the eighth inning of Saturday's opening 3-1 win. He was not needed on the mound in the series finale, thanks in part to his two hits, including a back-breaking opposite field home run in the seventh inning of what was then a 5-3 game.

Wilson is 2-0 this year with six saves in nine ASUN pitching appearances while slugging .477 with a team-high 15 RBI in league play.

Jack Perkins continued his sparkling run of starts in ASUN play with 7.2 shutout innings on Saturday at FGCU. Over his last five starts in ASUN play, Perkins is 5-0 with a 1.01 ERA having allowed just four ER over 35.2 innings of work with 38 strikeouts and just 9 walks.

On Saturday he out-dueled FGCU left-hander Josh Dye in leading the Hatters to a 3-1 victory over the Eagles. He retired 15 of the first 17 FGCU hitters in the game which, combined with retiring 16 straight to finish against JU last week, gave him a stretch of 31 of 33 hitters retired. He is now 6-0 in ASUN play with a 1.96 ERA and is 9-2 overall with a 2.58 ERA in 13 starts.

Should the Hatters go on to clinch an outright ASUN regular season title, it will be the fourth for Stetson since the league went to one division. Other ASUN regular season crowns for Stetson came in 2000, 2007 and 2011. The Hatters have never won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year.

The Hatters will close the regular season at home this weekend with a three-game series against USC Upstate. The games in that series, which will all be broadcast on ESPN+, are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday, which will be senior day for the four senior members of the squad - Wilson, Ben Onyshko, Austin Hale and Nico Torino.
