Stetson Set to Square Off Against FSU

Stetson will play host to Florida State Wednesday afternoon at Melching Field in the final visit to DeLand for FSU coach Mike Martin.

The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Evan Weston and Robert Goldberg on the call of the action.

The Hatters (20-26) come into the game against Florida State well-rested after having had their series finale against FGCU rained out on Sunday. Wednesday's game will begin a stretch of eight games in 11 days to close out the 2019 regular season before the start of the ASUN Tournament, which will be played at Melching Field May 22-25.

FSU (31-17) comes into the game after having split a double-header at home against Jacksonville yesterday. The Seminoles took the opening game 3-0 before JU won the second game 3-2.

Martin, is the only collegiate coach in any sport at any level to have surpassed 2,000 career victories, has an 11-4 record in games against the Hatters in DeLand. The Hatters handed Martin and the Seminoles a 5-3 loss at Melching Field last year, a win that marked the start of Stetson's 18-game winning streak. The victory also snapped a 15-game overall losing streak against FSU.

The Seminoles took a pair of games from the Hatters two weeks ago in Tallahassee. FSU won the series opener 9-8 before taking the second game 10-4. Junior Jorge Arenas had four hits and four RBI in those two games to lead Stetson.

This past Saturday was a busy day for the Hatters, who completed Friday's 2-1 series-opening win against FGCU, and then took a 5-3 victory in the second game of the series, all after almost the entire team spent the day taking final exams.

The series finale against FGCU was rained out, giving the Hatters a sweep of the Eagles for the second straight year and for just the third time in the 12-year history of the series. Stetson has won six consecutive games from the Eagles and nine of the last 10 to close the all-time series to within 20-18 in favor of FGCU.

Pitching keyed the two wins for Stetson to take the series. Sophomore Chris Gonzalez and freshman Danny Garcia combined to hold FGCU to just the one run in the opening game, which was suspended on Friday night in the top of the sixth inning. The duo of freshman Daniel Paret and senior Vlad Nunez combined to hold the Eagles to one earned run in the second game of the series.

Offensively, sophomore Jake Murphy was the star of the weekend. In just his second career start in the series opener, he had a double and a triple and drove in a run.  He had a hit and a walk and scored a run in the second game. Freshman Mark Townsend had the big hit in that game, a three-run triple in the third inning.

Stetson has now won four of its six ASUN series so far this year and has won 14 of its last 17 league series overall.
Stetson is now 8-8 in one-run games and 3-3 in two-run games this year. One of those one-run losses came in the first game against FSU. During the 2018 season the Hatters were 12-2 in one-run games and 8-2 in two run games.

Because of Sunday rain out, sophomore Robbie Peto will get the start against FSU, but will be on a pitch limit. Peto is 0-2 with a 1.98 ERA over his last two starts despite having allowed just three earned runs in 13.2 innings of work. Peto has been the Hatters hard-luck starter this year. In his 11 starts Stetson has scored a total of 30 runs (2.7/game) and has scored more than three runs just three times. Peto has allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight of his 11 starts for a 1.90 ERA in those games. In his other three starts he allowed 17 ER in just 6.2 innings of work for a 22.94 ERA.

As of lunch time, FSU had not announced who they would send to the mound to start the game.

Stetson will go on the road for the final time in 2019 this weekend when the Hatters venture north on I-95 for a three-game series against Jacksonville. The games at Sessions Stadium are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games in that series are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
