ASUN Recognizes Record 254 Hatters for Academic Excellence

Atlanta, Ga. – A record 254 Stetson University student-athletes received ASUN Honor Roll accolades for posting a 3.0 grade point average or better during the 2020-21 academic year.

The 254 honorees surpasses the Hatters' previous all-time high of 250, set last year.  Overall, 86.1 percent of Stetson student-athletes who compete in the ASUN posted a GPA of 3.0 or better during the past academic year, marking the second-highest percentage total in school history.

Stetson ranked third among the nine league members in percentage of student-athletes earning a spot on the Honor Roll.  Bellarmine University claimed the ASUN Academic Champion Trophy with 87.6 percent of its student-athletes landing on the Honor Roll. Lipscomb placed second at 86.6 percent, just one-half a percentage point ahead of third-place Stetson in the academic standings.

Four of Stetson's teams - women's cross country, women's soccer, volleyball and men's tennis - saw 100 percent of their student-athletes earn ASUN Honor Roll status.  Men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, and softball just missed, with 8-of-9 for men's cross country, 8-of-9 for women's golf, 9-of-10 for men's golf and 22-of-23 for softball earning honor roll status. Student-athletes from football and men's and women's rowing compete in other conferences and are not included in the ASUN totals.

Overall, a league-record 79.36 percent of ASUN student-athletes posted a 3.0 GPA or better to earn Honor Roll recognition surpassing the 71.7 percent set in 2017-18. In the 21st year of the ASUN Honor Roll, the 2020-21 season marked the fourth time in the last five countable seasons in which 70 percent or more of student-athletes collected Honor Roll status. For the first time in league history, all nine ASUN institutions registered at least 70 percent of their student-athletes on the Honor Roll while four had over 80 percent and six over 75 percent.

"ASUN student-athletes continue to break all-time performance records," ASUN Commissioner Ted Gumbart said. "It is an honor and privilege to support the collective group of young women and men who achieve such levels of academic success."

Across all league sports, 12 reached at least 75 percent for Honor Roll recognition with six over 90 percent in Women's Soccer (96.05%), Beach Volleyball (94.74%), Women's Tennis (94.44%), Volleyball (94.07%), Women's Golf (90.48%) and Women's Cross Country (90.27%). In total, 1,919 ASUN Conference student-athletes registered at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2020-21 academic year.

In order to be named to the Academic Honor Roll, the student-athlete must be on the current squad list and earn a minimum 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale during the 2020-21 academic year.
