Hatters set to face UCA in First Round of ASUN tournament

Conway, Ark. -- Let the madness begin. The regular season was 29 games of preparation for Tuesday night as the Stetson University men's basketball team gets set for the first round of the ASUN Conference Championship tournament against University of Central Arkansas. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Recap
The Hatters ended the regular season with a 74-69 overtime loss to North Florida on Saturday at the Edmunds Center. Chase Johnston put up 25 points for his third straight game of 20 or more dating back to his 38-point performance against Liberty back on Feb. 19. Christiaan Jones recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 boards.

Scouting the Bears
Central Arkansas enters Tuesday night's game having gone 2-3 over its final five games of the year. Like the Hatters, the Bears dropped their final game of the regular season, an 81-66 decision at Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon. They finished the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and 7-9 record in ASUN action. The Bears have played better at the Farris Center, going 7-4 on their home court this year.

UCA sports a very balanced attack as four players average 11.0 points or more. Camren Hunter leads the Bears with 14.5 points per game, good for ninth in the league. Darious Hall follows Hunter with 12.8 points per game while Eddy Kayouloud and Jared Chatham round out the double figure scorers with 11.4 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. As a team, UCA shoots 44 percent from the field, good for eighth in the ASUN. However, UCA's kryptonite has been beyond the arc as the Bears shoot a conference worst 30.4 percent from downtown.

Last Time We Met
The Hatters and the Bears met for the first time ever back on Feb. 5. UCA came away with the 79-75 win, but the Hatters nearly overcame an 18-point deficit with under 9:00 in regulation. A Jones layup made it a one-possession game with 14 seconds left, but that was the closest Stetson would get as the Bears knocked down their free throws at the end. Tuesday's game is win or go home and the Hatters are looking for redemption on Scottie Pippen Court.

Scouting The Hatters
Stetson enters Tuesday's game with an 11-18 overall record and 5-11 in ASUN action. The Hatters finished the regular season on a five-game losing streak, but all that goes out the window come March 1. It's a clean slate and it begins with UCA.

Despite their five-game losing streak, the Hatters have been led by Johnston's 24.4 points per game over the last five games. On the year, the Boca Raton native is averaging 15.3 points per game, good for fifth in the league. Jones is third on the Hatters with 12.7 points per game and has averaged 10.2 boards per game over the last five games. As a team, Stetson shoots at a 42.8 percent clip from the field, good for ninth in the league and 34.6 percent from downtown, good for eighth in the ASUN.

March Madness
It is called March Madness for a reason. This is the time of year where it is win or go home and it all starts on Tuesday night at the Farris Center. Anything can happen and any one team can win on any given night. Welcome to March, Hatters basketball fans.
