Fast Start, Great Pitching, Lead Hatters Past FAMU 11-0

Sophomore Jonathan Gonzalez and junior Bret Neilan combined to throw a shutout on Saturday at Melching Field as the Stetson Hatters blanked Florida A&M for the second straight day, downing the Rattlers 11-0.

It is the first time for the Hatters to post consecutive shutout wins since last February when Stetson defeated FAMU 6-0 and followed up with a 7-0 win over UCF.

Gonzalez (2-2) started and picked up the win for Stetson (9-5), going seven shutout innings while giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out seven. Neilan finished things off, going two shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out two.

The Hatters jumped on FAMU (6-10) starting pitcher Shawn Host (1-3) for five runs in the opening inning and then five more in the second to put the outcome of the game out of doubt. The Hatters had five hits, all singles, in the first inning, and followed up with four more hits in the second. Nick DiPonzio and Cameron Hill both had doubles in the second, with Hill's driving in a pair of runs.

Overall, the Hatters were led by offensively by sophomore Anthony DeFabbia, who had three hits, drove in a pair of run and scored another. Kyle Ball also had a three-hit game while Hill and DiPonzio had two hits each.

The Hatters and Rattlers will finish off their weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
