PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Stetson University men's golf team wrapped up its fall season on a high note this morning, climbing eight spots over the final five holes to finish tied for fifth at the weather-shortened Florida Atlantic Invitational at Panther National.
Play was suspended last night with most Stetson golfers having only a few holes left in the tournament's second round. Golfers that did not finish, returned to the course at 8:30 this morning to complete their remaining holes. In addition, last night tournament organizers decided to cancel today's final round and to shorten the tournament to 36 holes.
Tarleton State claimed the team championship by eight strokes over runner-up South Florida with an 18-under par 558. North Alabama claimed third at 2-under and was the only other team in the field to register a team score below par. Abilene Christian finished at even par, two strokes ahead of Stetson and Jacksonville.
As a team, the Hatters made the tournament's second-biggest improvement from the first to second rounds. Stetson started the day with a first round score of 5-over par but a strong finish to the second round this morning saw the team end up at 3-under.
Grad transfer Matthis Lefèver rebounded from his 1-over par opening round to shoot 69, which included five birdies and an eagle, and finish the tournament at 2-under par and in 14th place among the 88-golfer field. Gaspar Glaudas also posted a top 20 finish, ending up in 19th place after turning in rounds of 73-70 to finish at 1-under par. Like Lefèver, he gained two strokes with a pair of birdies among his final three holes this morning.
Simon Engman, who finished seventh in last year's FAU Invitational, went 73-73 to finish at 2-over and in 37th place. Gabriel Lindahl and Rasmus Ronnbergeach shot 74-73 to finish at 3-over par.
This week's event marks the conclusion of Stetson's fall schedule, which has included appearances at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Chandler, Ariz.), the William H. Tucker Invitational (Albuquerque, N.M.), the West Bay Collegiate (Estero, Fla.), and last week's Furman Invitational (Greenville, S.C.).
