EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. — Fresh off a dramatic tournament victory, the Stetson women's golf team will return to the course Monday morning when the Hatters open play at the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston at The Plantation Course.
The two-day, 54-hole event will begin Monday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start as the field plays 36 continuous holes before returning Tuesday for the final 18. The Plantation Course will play as a par-71 layout measuring 5,980 yards.
Stetson heads to South Carolina with plenty of momentum after capturing the Navy Fall Invite championship in its last time out. The Hatters entered the final round in Annapolis 13 shots behind host Navy before putting together the lowest team round of the tournament, firing a 12-over 300 to erase the entire deficit and force a playoff at 33-over 609.
Stetson went on to defeat Navy in the playoff to secure the tournament title, completing a comeback that featured contributions throughout the lineup. All five Hatters improved their scores from the opening round, while four finished the weekend inside the individual top 10.
Leading the way was junior Isaki Sakashita, who carded rounds of 75 and 74 to finish tied for third at 5-over 149. Sakashita was Stetson's top finisher in both rounds and made the turn at 2-under during Sunday's comeback effort before closing with a team-best 74. Her performance helped earn her ASUN Women's Golfer of the Week honors following the victory.
Bridget Butler added a sixth-place finish at 9-over 153, while Clara Willem tied for seventh at 10-over 154. Anna Huettl gave the Hatters their fourth top-10 finisher, placing tied for ninth at 11-over 155, while Maya Burmann climbed 20 spots on the final leaderboard after improving by nine strokes with a closing-round 75.
The Hatters will now look to carry that balanced performance into a 14-team field at Edisto Island. Joining Stetson and host College of Charleston will be Bradley, Charleston Southern, Elon, Georgia State, High Point, Presbyterian, Radford, Tennessee Tech, The Citadel, West Georgia, Western Carolina and Western Michigan.Â
Stetson will play Monday's opening 36 holes alongside Elon and West Georgia, with the three programs beginning on holes four through seven as part of the 9 a.m. shotgun start.Â
The Edisto Island Invitational will conclude Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
