EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. — Stetson women's golf put together a strong second-round performance Monday to finish the opening day of the Edisto Island Invitational in fourth place at The Plantation Course at Edisto.
The Hatters followed an opening-round 298 with a 6-over 290 in the afternoon to finish 36 holes at 20-over 588. Stetson's eight-shot improvement moved the Hatters into fourth in the 14-team field, just two strokes behind third-place Charleston Southern. Host Charleston leads the tournament at 1-under 567, followed closely by High Point at 569.
Isaki Sakashita once again paced the Hatters, finishing the day tied for fourth individually at 1-under 141. Sakashita opened with a 1-over 72 before firing a 2-under 69 in the second round, one of just five players in the field to finish the opening 36 holes under par. She will enter Tuesday's final round five shots behind individual leader Makayla Grubb of High Point.
Clara Willem provided Stetson's biggest turnaround of the day. After carding a 79 in the morning, Willem responded with a 1-under 70 in the second round, improving by nine strokes and climbing to 22nd at 7-over 149. Her 70 joined Sakashita's 69 to give the Hatters a pair of under-par rounds during their afternoon surge.
Maya Burmann sits tied for 27th at 9-over 151 following rounds of 75 and 76, while Maggie Potash is tied for 30th at 10-over 152 after improving from a first-round 77 to a 75. Bridget Butler rounds out the Stetson lineup in a tie for 34th at 11-over 153 after rounds of 74 and 79.
Stetson enters the final round three strokes ahead of fifth-place Georgia State and 11 shots clear of sixth-place Elon. The Hatters will have an opportunity to chase another top finish just two weeks after winning the Navy Fall Invite, while Sakashita will look to remain in contention near the top of the individual leaderboard.
The Edisto Island Invitational concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes on the par-71, 5,953-yard Plantation Course.
