Team Effort Keeps Hatters Near The Top In Puerto Rico

DORADO, Puerto Rico — The Stetson University men's golf team shook off a sluggish start and finished strong Sunday, closing the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate in a tie for third place in the 15-team field at TPC Dorado Beach.

The Hatters posted a 2-over-par 290 in the first of three tournament rounds and are tied with George Mason. Both teams sit one stroke behind tournament host UNC Greensboro and two shots back of leader Elon, which carded an even-par 288. Butler and Southern Miss are tied for fifth at 5-over.

Stetson's French tandem of Gaspar Glaudas and Matthis Lefèvre each shot even-par 72 and are tied for 13th in the 93-player field. Rasmus Ronnberg and Simon Engman are one stroke back at 1-over 73, while Jackson Hicks finished at 3-over 75.  Four Hatter golfers are within two strokes of the top-10 on the individual leaderboard.

Gabriel Lindahl, competing as an individual, also carded a 3-over 75 and is part of a nine-way tie at that number.

Engman delivered one of the steadiest rounds of the day, recording 17 pars — the most in the field — with just one bogey to finish at 1-over. The native of Gothenburg, Sweden started on No. 8 and, after a bogey on No. 10, made par on each of the final 14 holes.

Glaudas turned in a steady 1-over on his opening nine, before he caught fire on his final nine holes with a pair of birdies to finish at 1-under and secure his even-par round.

Lefèvre overcame a 3-over stretch through his first six holes, steadied himself with three consecutive pars to close his opening nine, and added a pair of birdies on the back nine to offset two bogeys and finish at even par.

The Hatters return to the course Monday for the second round with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Stetson will be paired with golfers from Elon, George Mason and UNC Greensboro. Live results are available throughout the tournament by clicking here.
