Hatters Split Midweek Matches at Cooper Beach

DeLand, Fla. — Stetson split a pair of matches Wednesday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex, falling to No. 7 Florida State 4-1 before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M–Corpus Christi.

The Hatters opened the day against the nationally ranked Seminoles, where Florida State claimed four of the five courts.

Florida State took an early lead at the top flight as Alexis Durish and Audrey Koenig defeated Maria Ozaeta and Marta Carro 21-7, 21-16. The Seminoles added another point at No. 5 with Myriah Massey and Bailey Higgins topping Madeline Camp and Cayla Sutton 21-13, 21-10, followed by a win at No. 4 where Gella Andrew and Maddie Trusty defeated Danielle Hernandez and Lucie Nosálková 21-15, 21-11.

Stetson picked up its lone point at No. 2 as EJ Cudmore and Julia Radelczuk delivered a strong performance, defeating Audrey Rothman and Saofe Duval 21-19, 21-17.

The final match of the dual came at No. 3, where Florida State's Jess Horwath and Camryn Haworth outlasted Anniina Muukka and Zoe Flueckiger in a tightly contested three-set battle, 22-24, 21-19, 16-14.

Stetson responded in the afternoon match, edging Texas A&M–Corpus Christi 3-2.

The Islanders struck first at No. 4 as Lizzie Denyer and Ashlyn Rough defeated Camp and Sutton 21-17, 21-16. The Hatters answered at No. 3, where Zoe Flueckiger and Lucie Nosalkova earned a straight-sets victory over Bryce Ranney and Kaitreanne Chojnacki, 21-17, 21-12.

Stetson took the lead at the top flight as Ozaeta and Carro defeated Madison Morrow and Kristin Bobay 24-22, 21-17. Texas A&M–Corpus Christi tied the dual at No. 5 when Mia Stevens and Saskia Hernandez topped Julia Czurylo and Danielle Hernandez 21-15, 21-16.

The decisive match came at No. 2, where Cudmore and Radelczuk rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Duda Fernandes de M and Millie Olsson 20-22, 21-14, 15-11, clinching the team victory for the Hatters.

Stetson returns to the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex this weekend to host the Stetson Spring Invitational from Friday, Mar. 13 through Saturday, Mar. 14. The Hatters will welcome North Alabama, Southern Miss, FGCU, Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, and UAB, with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday in DeLand.
