DeLand, Fla. — Stetson closed the Stetson Spring Invitational with a pair of 3-2 victories Saturday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex, defeating UAB and FGCU in tightly contested duals.
The Hatters opened the day by edging UAB 3-2 behind wins on courts two, three, and five.
Madeline Camp and
Cayla Sutton got Stetson on the board first at the No. 5 flight, defeating Delaney Rich and Ashley Torsone in straight sets, 21-18, 21-16. UAB answered with a point in the top flight as Olivia Stant and Jasmine Haas defeated
Maria Ozaeta and
Marta Carro, 21-17, 23-21.
The Blazers took the lead when Ava Knott and Olivia Chychrun topped
Danielle Hernandez and
Lucie Nosálková at No. 4, 21-18, 21-14. Stetson quickly responded at No. 3 as
Anniina Muukka and
Zoe Flueckiger evened the score with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Sadie Sharpe and Claudia Stockard.
The decisive point came at No. 2, where
EJ Cudmore and
Julia Radelczuk secured the dual for the Hatters with a 21-17, 21-18 victory over Pien Grooters and Lauren Cairo.
Stetson followed with another narrow victory in the tournament finale, edging FGCU 3-2.
Camp and Sutton once again started the scoring for the Hatters, defeating Emma Soncrant and Elaina Millaway 21-15, 21-19 at the No. 5 position.
Ozaeta and Carro added another point at the top flight in a three-set battle against Erin Miller and Nicole De Oliveira. After dropping the first set 19-21, the Stetson duo rallied to take the next two sets 21-17 and 15-11.
FGCU evened the dual with wins on courts three and four. Andrea Dietz and Sydney Majick defeated Muukka and Flueckiger 21-17, 17-21, 15-10, while Kaitlyn Beck and Kristina Gluc outlasted
Katie Camp and
Lucie Nosálková 22-20, 18-21, 15-11.
With the match tied, Cudmore and Radelczuk delivered again at No. 2, clinching the dual with a hard-fought 21-17, 18-21, 17-15 victory over Alexis Keeter and Ava Lilliquist.
"Tight finish to the day, but it was exciting," said head coach
Kristina Hernandez. "I expect matches like that anytime we play a conference opponent. We had four courts go to three sets, and I'm really happy Kayla and Maddie secured that first point for us at the five. Julia and EJ really dialed it up this weekend and stepped up in some high-pressure moments. To come back from being down four or five points in the third set and still finish it off shows a lot about this team. It was a great weekend overall to go 4-0 and finish 5-1 on the week."
Stetson will return to action next weekend at the North Florida Invite in Jacksonville, beginning Friday, Mar. 20 with an 8:00 a.m. matchup against Florida Atlantic.
