Hatters Hold Off West Georgia, Take Series Opener 4-3

DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson used timely hitting and a strong outing on the mound to secure a 4-3 victory over West Georgia in the ASUN series opener Friday night at Melching Field.

The Hatters (10-13, 2-2 ASUN) jumped out early and responded each time the Wolves threatened, holding on late behind a composed bullpen effort to claim the one-run win.

Stetson struck first in the second inning, manufacturing a run as freshman Julian Mercado came around to score following a double from Nelphie Lopez, giving the Hatters a 1-0 lead.

West Georgia answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage, but Stetson responded immediately in the bottom half. Mercado reached and later scored on an RBI single from Jack Harley to even the game, before Lopez crossed the plate on a Renzo Gonzalez double to push the Hatters back in front, 3-2.

The Hatters added a key insurance run in the fifth when Jayden Hylton launched a solo home run to right field, extending the lead to 4-2.

West Georgia trimmed the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Stetson's pitching staff held firm down the stretch. Joel Core was sharp out of the bullpen, closing out the final four innings to secure the win.

James Hays earned the victory on the mound, improving to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander worked five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

At the plate, Stetson received contributions throughout the lineup, with Mercado reaching twice and scoring multiple runs, while Harley, Lopez, and Hylton each delivered key RBIs in the win.
