MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Stetson University junior Simon Engman turned in a 2-under par over 36 holes to lead the Hatters after the the first day of competition at the Giles-Spratley Intercollegiate at Independence Golf Club.
As a team, Stetson sits in seventh place among the 14-team field at 2-over par, having moved up three spots on the leaderboard after posting even par in the afternoon's second round.
The College of Charleston owns the team lead by five strokes over runner-up FGCU after turning in an impressive 18-under par in the morning's first round. The Cougars posted a 1-under par in the afternoon to finish the day at 19-under. Liberty is in third place at 6-under, while VCU and host Richmond round out the top five as the only other teams that turned in rounds below par.
Engman, a computer science major from Gothenburg, Sweden, opened the tournament with an impressive 3-under par 69 in the morning's first round to lead the Hatters. His 36-hole score represents one of 27 golfers with red numbers and sits in a tie for 12th place with nine other golfers.
Charleston's Jules Lauer and FGCU's Sacha Ruiz shared the spot at the top of the individual leaderboard, both finishing the first 36 holes at 9-under par. Mason Minkel of VCU sits just one stroke back in third place.
Freshman Thanattasorn Supinraj, playing his first collegiate tournament as a scoring member of the lineup, turned in rounds of 71-73 and his even par day has him owning a share of 28th place.
Senior Gaspar Glaudas moved up 20 positions on the leaderboard in the afternoon after posting a 2-under par 70. The defending ASUN Conference individual champion battled to a 4-over par 76 in the morning before finding his footing. Matthis Lefèvre turned in consecutive scores of 74 to sit at 5-over par.
Junior Gabriel Lindahl, playing as an individual, improved by five strokes in the afternoon, while teammate Jackson Hicks also rebounded from a difficult morning to move up 11 spots into a tie for 72nd place at 9-over par.
The 14-team field returns to the par 72, 7,135 yard golf course for Tuesday's final round, beginning with tee times from 8 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. off hole nos. 1 and 10.
Following the Giles-Spratley Collegiate, Stetson joins the rest of the men's golf programs in the ASUN Conference at the league's annual championship tournament. Scheduled for April 21-23 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga., the tournament champion earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA regionals scheduled for May 18-20.
