Junior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin HS) finished in fourth place at one over par while sophomore Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) came in just one shot behind in a tie for fifth place overall as the Stetson men's golf team took 11th place out of 18 teams at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic at Howey in the Hills.
Parker's four under par 68 on the first day of the two-day event was good enough for the overall lead, one shot ahead of Dave Tobon (Johnson and Wales FL) and eventual individual champion Brent Long of Western Kentucky. McAndrew carded consistent rounds of 73 and 71 to tie Tobon at +2.
Atlantic Sun Conference rival Lipscomb took home the team title with an overall score of +11, three shots better than tournament host St. John's. The Hatters, the only other A-Sun squad in the field, carded +38.
Other Hatter finishers at the event were senior Kris Stewart (Edgewater, Fla./New Smyrna Beach HS) at 78-81=159, +15, freshman Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla./Benjamin School) at 80-80=160, +16 and freshman Matt Pitts (Orlando, Fla./Pendleton HS) at 81-83=164, +22.
The Hatters tee it up next at Crowfield Plantation Golf Club in Charleston, S.C. October 22-23 for the Charleston Southern Invitational.
