Daytona Beach, Fla. ? Stetson junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) defeated his senior teammate Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) on the first hole of a sudden death playoff Sunday to win the individual title at the Bethune-Cookman Invitational. The duo each finished the 36-hole event at Indigo Lakes Country Club six under par, leading the Hatters to the team championship at -5, two shots better than Florida Atlantic.
After the first round of the tournament was rained out on Friday, McAndrew fired consecutive three under par rounds of 69 over the weekend while Parker followed up an opening 70 with a sharp four under par 68 on Sunday.
Sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot 74-69 to finish -1 overall in a tie for sixth place and sophomore Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) came in at +8 in 23rd place after rounds of 77-75. Freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) tallied 77-79 for a +12 score and a 27th place finish.
Sunday's strong scoring allowed Stetson to make up a three-shot deficit on the Owls and win their first tournament of the season. 10 teams competed in the tournament, including the host Wildcats, Florida A&M and South Carolina State, all of which will come to Victoria Hills Country Club next week for the Stetson/CFSC Invitational (Nov. 3-4). The 54-hole event and the concurrent Hatter Fall Classic women's tournament will mark the conclusion of the highly successful 2008 Stetson Golf fall campaigns.
