Hatters Finish Third, McAndrew Fifth at Mission Inn Collegiate Classic

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. ? Stetson junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) shot even par 71 in the final round of the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic on Sunday to finish fifth overall and lead the Hatters to a third place team finish.  McAndrew recorded rounds of 73-70-71 at the Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course to tally +1 while the Hatters were +22 as a team.

 

Sophomore Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) and senior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) each shot one over par 72 in Sunday's final round while sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) fired a 76 for the final counting score.  Freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.), who came into the day tied for seventh place, struggled on Sunday, carding a 78 to finish in a tie for 17th place overall at +8 with Parker and three other competitors.  Stewart tied for 22nd place at +9 while Costa finished 16 over par in a tie for 45th place.

 

Atlantic Sun Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast ran away with the team championship, finishing two under par for the weekend, 12 strokes better than second place Jacksonville State.  Stetson finished another 12 shots behind in third, edging out Johnson & Wales (Fla.) by one stroke.  Western Kentucky (+34) came in fifth, one stroke ahead of host St. John's.  Rounding out the field was Appalachian State (+37), Bethune-Cookman (+44), Charleston Southern (+46), Ohio (+50), Florida Atlantic (+51), Villanova (+55), Boston College (+68), Savannah State (+86) and Florida A&M (+112).

 

Jacksonville State's Mark Whisenant, who entered the final round tied for third, led the field with a 67 in the final round to finish five under par and win by two strokes over teammate Hunter Hawkins.  FGCU's Michael Hart and Kyle Hammond tied for third place at -2 with McAndrew three strokes behind in fifth.

 

Stetson is off until Monday, October 20 when it begins play at the two-day Charleston Southern Fall Invitational at Crowfield Plantation Golf & Country Club in North Charleston, S.C.
