Daytona Beach, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team (2-3) picked up its second consecutive victory Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win at Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman. The #4-6 singles players all recorded flawless 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Senior Catherine Canady (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) began singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles over Reijina Hopkins and junior Samantha Lange (Middle Island, N.Y.) soon followed suit at #6 with a blanking of Melanie Cheatham. The Hatters picked up a third 6-0, 6-0 win when senior Anna Leonenko (Calgary, Alta.) swept away Chanetra Brown at #4 singles. Freshman Megan Jones (Miramar, Fla./Broward Virtual Education) won 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles against Jeneice Ward while freshman Unnati Purushotham's (Hyderabad, India) opponent, Andrea Paez, was forced to retire from the match in the second set. Purushotham was credited with a 6-2, 2-0 victory.
All three doubles matches went in favor of Stetson with the #3 duo of sophomore Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) and junior Katherine St. Clair (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) shutting out Hopkins and Cheatham 8-0. Leonenko and sophomore Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) beat Ward and Brown 8-5 at #2 singles while the top pairing of sophomore Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Purushotham were given a stiff challenge from B-CU's Paez and Monika Musilova. Stetson's international pair managed to come up with the 8-6 victory.
Musilova provided the Lady Wildcats with their only point of the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Atkinson at #1 singles.
Stetson is back in action Friday, shooting for its third straight win when it hosts the College of Charleston at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m.
