Spartanburg, S.C. ? The Stetson men's golf team finished the two-day Wofford Invitational in fifth place Tuesday afternoon in its final action of the regular season. Sophomore Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) continued his recent run of strong play by tying for seventh place overall.
McAndrew shot even-par 216 in the 54-hole event, contested over the par-72 layout at The Carolina Country Club, to tie with Matt Hayes of team champions Furman. Hugh Morrison of Presbyterian College won the tournament at six under par in a scorecard playoff with Furman's Ben Goforth.
Stetson's team score was 893 (+29), three shots behind fourth-place hosts Wofford and six shots better than sixth place Akron. Furman won the event at eight over par, four shots better than Atlantic Sun foe USC Upstate. Presbyterian took third at +20. Appalachian State and Radford tied for seventh at +36 with Elon (+42), USC Beaufort (+57) and High Point (+60) rounding out the field.
Hatter senior Brenden Kennedy (Newport, N.H.) placed second among his teammates and tied for 21st overall with his score of 225 (+9) that included a one under-par 71 in the opening round. Junior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) came in one stroke behind Kennedy in a tie for 24th place while freshman Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) also recorded a top 30 finish, tying for 27th place at 228 (+12). Michael Stewart (Edgewater, Fla.), also a freshman, completed the Stetson quintet with his total of 20 over par 236.
The Hatters now turn their attention to the Atlantic Sun conference championship tournament, which will be hosted by Kennesaw State at The Woodlands at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. The tournament will begin Monday, April 21 and run through Wednesday, April 23.
