Stetson Completes Day One at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

Men's Golf Stetson University

Stetson Holds Onto Sixth Place at A-Sun Championships

Braselton, Ga. ? Sophomore Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) shot a one over par 72 to lead the Stetson men's golf team in the second round of the Atlantic Sun conference championships on Tuesday.  Freshman Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) used a 35 on the front nine to help himself to a final tally of 73 (+2) at The Woodlands Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club.  The Hatters stand at +38, one stroke ahead of seventh-place Belmont.

McAndrew is tied for 17th place overall and Costa is tied for 19th after 36 holes in the field of 10 teams and 50 golfers.  McAndrew made 15 pars, three bogeys and two birdies (on the par-four 12th and 511-yard, par-5 15th, respectively) to shoot the lowest score by a Hatter in this year's championship.  Costa made both of his birdies on the front nine and although he made a few bogeys on the back, he made pars on 17 and 18 to steady himself down the stretch.

Junior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) carded a 77 after a 75 yesterday, slipping to a tie for 24th place, while freshman Michael Stewart (Edgewater, Fla.) and senior Brenden Kennedy (Newport, N.H.) each tallied rounds of 78 for the second consecutive day.  Stewart's scorecard shows a rollercoaster round that featured two birdies and two double bogies on the front nine.  Stewart showed great poise in shaking off four straight bogeys to start the back nine with two under-par golf on the final five holes, including a birdie at 18 to finish with a flourish on the 6,735-yard, par-71 layout.

Scoring conditions were much better today than yesterday, as evidenced by the fact that nine of the 10 teams improved on their first round scores by at least two strokes.  Only surprise first round leader Gardner-Webb found the going rough, dropping 21 strokes to par today.

The race for the conference crown tightened up immensely on Tuesday with 20th-ranked defending champions East Tennessee State moving up to claim a one-stroke lead at 11 over par over North Florida.  Host Kennesaw State is one shot behind UNF at +13 with Campbell in fourth place at +18 and Gardner-Webb right behind in fifth at +21.  After the Hatters and Bruins, Mercer (+43), Lipscomb (+48) and Jacksonville (+55) round out the field.

ETSU's Gareth Shaw holds the individual lead at six under par after shooting the low round of the day this afternoon with a 67.  Oliver West (Kennesaw State) is four shots back in second place while Shaw's teammate Rhys Enoch is in third at -1.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with a final 18-hole round.  Stetson players will again start going off the first tee at 9:40 a.m.  Each Hatter will be paired with a golfer from Campbell and Gardner-Webb.
