Tampa, Fla. ? The Stetson women's soccer team (0-4-1) traveled to Tampa Thursday night, played its strongest game of the young season, and came home with a 1-1 tie with the USF Bulls (2-1-2).
“In my opinion this was the best game Stetson ever played in terms of having goal-scoring opportunities and dominating all over the field,” said Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “It was too bad we gave up the late goal, but I am proud of everyone on the team from top to bottom.”
USF ended up scoring a goal with less than a minute left in regulation to spoil the win, but it did not break the Hatters' spirit. They led the Bulls 4-2 in overtime shots and kept the USF goalkeeper on the move, yet could not punch home a game-winner.
Stetson jumped out to a lead at 31:47 of the first half on the first career goal for Sarah Rodriguez (Deltona, Fla./DeLand HS). It was the first time the freshman had touched the ball in the game as she had just checked into the game. The play started with a free kick from near midfield by fellow freshman Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.). The kick sailed towards the goal where Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.) was first to the ball and headed it over to Katie Bitetto (Jacksonville, Fla.) who then flicked it through to Rodriguez. After a review of the play Gavilsky and Bitetto were credited with assists.
Stetson keeper Andrea Garavaglia had another solid performance facing 20 shots and making four saves. The back three of Gavilsky, Hermosa, and Emily Yero (Orlando, Fla.) played an outstanding game. It was perhaps the best game Yero has played in her three years with the Hatters.
“Tonight's game was a heavyweight battle at both ends of the field,” said Orlowski. “Our team played with heart and intensity for the entire 110 minutes.”
After playing four of its first five games on the road, Stetson will now return home for a five-game home stand that begins this Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game versus Embry-Riddle.
