Sunset Beach, N.C. ? Sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot a one under par 71 for the Stetson men's golf team in the second round of the Sea Trail Intercollegiate Saturday, but the Hatters could not take advantage of good scoring conditions and fell into a tie for seventh place overall in the 18-team field with one round to go.
Junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) followed up his 71 yesterday with a three over par 75 this afternoon, putting him in a tie for 13th place individually at two over par, five strokes behind tournament leader Hunter Ford of Murray State. Costa is tied for 22nd place at +4 overall.
Senior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) shot 77 for the second day in a row and sophomore Joe Brown (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) carded a 79. Freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.), who tied McAndrew for the team lead with a 71 in the first round, struggled on Saturday with an eight over par round of 80. After 36 holes, Ryder is tied for 38th in the 84-golfer field.
Murray State (+2) solidified its hold on first place, opening up a 14-stroke lead over second place Belmont-Abbey. USC Upstate of the Atlantic Sun Conference is in third place at +17, followed by a fourth-place tie between Guilford and Tennessee Tech at 18 over par. Host Elon is sixth at 21 over par with the Hatters and Wofford tied at +22. Radford, Appalachian State and Houston Baptist round out the top 10 in a three-way tie at +23.
The Sea Trail Intercollegiate concludes with a final 18-hole round tomorrow.
