Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. ? The Stetson women's golf team was declared the winner of the Queens University Invitational Monday afternoon after heavy rain and lightning forced all players off the TPC Sawgrass Pete Dye Valley Course after nine holes of the second round. The Hatters, who were tied for the lead with Florida Southern after yesterday's round, earned the victory based on the fifth score tiebreaker.
The top four scores for the Hatters and the Moccasins created a tie at +13 which had to be broken by comparing the normally unused fifth score for each squad. Stetson freshman Jen Gartin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) shot 78 yesterday while Florida Southern's Marianne Andersson carded an 81, giving the Hatters the win in their fall season opener.
Junior Lauren Darnell (Gainesville, Ga.) fired a two over par 73 to tie for fourth place while freshman Lauren Cate (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for seventh in her collegiate debut with a 76. Two strokes back in a tie for 13th place was junior Danielle Jackson (Seminole, Fla.) while Gartin and sophomore Alex Banham (Birmingham, England) tied for 22nd place at +6. Stetson senior Christine Fraser (Kingston, Ont.) competed unattached and shot 75 to lead all unattached players and tie for 11th place overall.
The victory for the Hatters marks the third consecutive season in which they have won a tournament, all of which have come during their fall campaigns.
Stetson is back in action October 6-7 at the USF Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton, Fla.
