Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Senior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) shot one over par 72 to lead the Stetson men's golf team into a tie for fourth place after the first round of the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate on Friday at Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course. The Hatters are 13 over par as a team, twelve strokes behind leader Florida Gulf Coast; McAndrew is tied for ninth individually and is just four shots off the lead.
Junior Alex Jestings (Providence, R.I.) fired the best round of his college career, a two over par 73, to put himself in a tie for 12th place in the 67-golfer field. Junior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) and sophomore Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) shot 75 and 77 to round out Stetson's scoring pack and put themselves in respective ties for 22nd and 34th place. Redshirt freshman Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) carded an eight over par 79 and is tied for 39th place.
FGCU's Daniel Mazziotta carded the round of the day, a three under par 68 that left him a one-stroke lead over Jordan Lewis (Rollins) and Evan Beirne (St. John's). Boston College's Jan Prokop was the only other golfer in the field to break par with a 70; four other players shot 71, one better than McAndrew.
The FGCU Eagles lead the tournament at one over par after 18 holes and have a six-stroke advantage over Rollins with Appalachian State in third place at +9. The Hatters and Boston College are in a fourth place tie at +13, one stroke ahead of host St. John's. Rounding out the field are Villanova (+16), Western Kentucky (+17), Texas-Pan American (+17), Bethune-Cookman (+29), Loyola Md. (+30), Florida A&M (+38) and Savannah State (+59). The 54-hole tournament continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
