Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Stetson sophomore Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) carded a two under par 69, the second-lowest round of the day in the field, and moved into a tie for 10th place after the second round of the Mission Inn Fall Men's Intercollegiate on Saturday. The Hatters are tied for fifth with Boston College at 25 over par overall.
Only Peter Ballo of host St. John's, with a 66, did better than Ryder this morning on the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort. Ryder is four over par after 36 holes and eight strokes behind individual leader Daniel Mazziotta (FGCU). The three other counting scorers for the Hatters today were junior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) with a 73, senior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) with a 75 and redshirt freshman Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) with a 79. Junior Alex Jestings (Providence, R.I.) struggled to an 81 just one day after a career-low 73.
In the individual standings, McAndrew is tied for 13th at +5, Costa is tied for 15th place (+6), Jestings is tied for 35th at +12 and Jacobsen is in a tie for 46th position at +16. Mazziotta is four under par overall and leads Casey Johnson (Appalachian State) by two strokes; Mazziotta's FGCU teammate Josh Leppo is third at -1.
Mazziotta and Leppo have led A-Sun squad Florida Gulf Coast to a five over par score and a commanding 15-stroke lead over Appalachian State and St. John's with one round to go. Rollins (+23) is in fourth place, two strokes ahead of the Hatters and BC. Rounding out the field are Texas Pan American (+33), Villanova (+34), Western Kentucky (+35), Loyola Md. (+53), Bethune-Cookman (+59), Florida A&M (+67) and Savannah State (+106).
The tournament concludes tomorrow with a final round of 18 holes. Stetson golfers will tee off between 7:30 and 7:58 tomorrow morning paired with players from BC.
