Hatters Rise Up to Finish Sixth, Parker Earns All-Tournament Honors at A-Sun Championship

Buies Creek, N.C. ? The Stetson men's golf team kept its poise amidst gusting winds and hardening greens, carding the third-best team score of the final round and moving up the leaderboard for a sixth-place finish at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships on Wednesday at Keith Hills Golf Club.  Senior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) tied for fifth place at one over par to earn All-Tournament honors, the first Hatter to do so or finish that high since Francis McCahill in 2002.  The sixth place finish matched Stetson's mark a year ago as its highest team placing since 2002.

Parker shot his second 74 in the last three days to move seven places up the individual leaderboard and tie for fifth with Mercer's Bill Jones III and USC Upstate's Josh Gallman at +1, four strokes behind individual champion Michael Stewart of ETSU (no relation to the Stetson sophomore of the same name).  Campbell's Vaita Guillaume took second at two under par with Mercer's Ryan Blackburn (-1) and UNF's Jeff Dennis (even) finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Host Campbell won its first A-Sun championship since 1999, recording a three over par 867 over 54 holes to beat defending champion North Florida by seven strokes.  The Camels will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Mercer shot the low round of the day, a seven over par 295, to zoom up to +12 and third place with 27th-ranked ETSU taking fourth at +17 and Florida Gulf Coast finishing fifth at 18 over par.  The Hatters took sixth at 26 over par, a significant improvement on its 10th place overnight standing with Kennesaw State (+30), Jacksonville (+32), Belmont (+36) and Lipscomb (+52) rounding out the field.

All five Hatter golfers shot either 74 or 75 in Wednesday's final round, with sophomore Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) carding the other 74 and tying for 27th place at eight over par on the week.  Junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) finished with the same score as Stewart after a final round 75, while freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) and sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) came in with equal numbers.  Ryder tied for 37th at +11 and Costa came in 41st with a +13 total.

Head Coach Bob Weickel's Stetson squad returns four of the five members of this contingent in 2009-10, including McAndrew, the Bethune-Cookman Invitational individual champion last fall.
