Charleston, S.C. ? Sophomore Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) shot even par 71 to key the Stetson men's golf team's rise up the leaderboard from seventh to fourth place in Tuesday's final round of the CSU Spring Kickoff, hosted by Charleston Southern University at Coosaw Creek Country Club. Junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) was Stetson's top finisher overall in a tie for seventh place.
McAndrew shot consistent rounds of 73-75-75 over the two-day tournament to tie for seventh place at 10 over par, 10 strokes behind individual winner Daniel Venema of Bethune-Cookman. Venema's Wildcat teammate Andy Heesom placed second at four over par, four shots back. Stewart rebounded from opening day scores of 77-81 to be one of only three players in the 65-player field to shoot even par or better on Tuesday. He tied for 20th place overall at 16 over par.
Hatter sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) finished ninth at +11 after rounds of 73-74-77. Senior Greg Chalas (Natick, Mass.) shot 82 in the final round and tied for 39th at +21 while freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) closed with a 78 to tie for 46th place at 25 over par.
Stetson's Atlantic Sun Conference rival Campbell won the tournament in a playoff with College of Charleston as both the Camels and Cougars finished 40 over par for 54 holes. B-CU took third at +50 with Stetson two strokes behind the Wildcats at +52. USC Beaufort (+55), Western Kentucky (+56), Appalachian State (+60), Charleston Southern (+66), Loyola [Md.] (+71), Armstrong Atlantic (+72), Fairfield (+88) and High Point (+96) rounded out the field.
The Hatters will now gear up for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, to be held April 20-22 at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C. and hosted by Campbell.
