Costa Leads Hatters After 36 Holes in Charleston

Kiawah Island, S.C. - Low scores proved difficult to attain for the Stetson men's golf team in the first two rounds of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Monday as the Hatters posted only five sub-80 rounds out of 10 scores on a long, grinding 36-hole day of competition in the Lowcountry.  Senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) played consistently, however, shooting 75-75 (+6) and making it into a tie for 14th place with 18 holes left.  The Hatters are in 10th place in the 14-team field at 55 over par.

Sophomore Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) also broke 80 twice, carding a 79 and a 78 to put himself in a tie for 41st at +13.  Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) tallied 81-81 while junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) saw his early momentum slip away late in the day to finish with rounds of 74 and 89.  Freshman Matt Lawrence (Fort Myers, Fla.) shot 87-88.

Brant Peaper's consecutive rounds of 68-69 staked 29th-ranked Indiana (+2) to a commanding 15-stroke lead over Campbell in the team competition and himself to a seven under par total, five strokes better than Longwood's Michael Young.  Peaper's fellow Hoosier David Mills is tied with South Carolina's Dean Hester for third at one over par.

College of Charleston is third in the team race at 22 over par with Longwood (+28), tournament host Charleston Southern (+38), Towson (+42), George Washington (+45), South Carolina (+49) and Presbyterian (+51) also currently leading the Hatters.  Rounding out the field are Western Kentucky (+60), Butler (+61), Western Illinois (+65) and Bethune-Cookman (+73).

The Kiawah Island Intercollegiate concludes tomorrow; live scoring is available here.
