Dahlonega, Ga. - Stetson women's golf rising sophomore Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) and rising junior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) remain well within striking distance of the lead after Wednesday's second round of the inaugural NGCA Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship. The Hatter pair carded a five under par 67 in the best ball format to move to -8 on the tournament; they stand in fourth place out of 53 teams and just three strokes out of first place with 18 holes left to play.
Buelow made birdies at the par three fifth hole and par four 10th hole while Cate contributed birdies on the par four eighth hole and the par five 14th hole. Both players birdied the par five 15th hole for the final red number on the card. Buelow and Cate managed to combine for at least one par on each of the other 13 holes.
Alabama's Jessica Kirby and Brooke Pancake maintained their first round lead with a 65 this afternoon; the duo is 11 under par on the week, one stroke ahead of Michelle Shin/Cheyenne Woods (Wake Forest) and Brittany Altomare/Elizabeth Brightwell (Virginia). The Wake Forest pair blistered the Achasta by Reynolds Golf Course for a 10 under par 62, the low round of the day. A three-way tie for fifth place at seven under par, one stroke behind Buelow and Cate, exists between teams from Duke, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
The Hatters, who opened with a three under par 69 in alternate shot yesterday, will join the field in aggregate stroke play competition in tomorrow's final round. Buelow and Cate will once again go off the first tee in the second-to-last group; they will begin at 9:48 a.m. tomorrow with Altomare and Brightwell.
