Ryder Leads Stetson in Mission Inn Opening Round

Hatters Brave Cold to Down Lipscomb

The Stetson men's golf team battled through cold and windy conditions on Sunday at Victorial Hills Golf Club to score a 20-stroke victory over Lipscomb in a dual meet to open the spring season.

The Hatters posted a team score of 294 for the round on the par 72 course which covered 7,149 yards. Lipscomb shot a 314.

“It was a great score in very cold conditions,” Hatters coach Bob Weickel said. “I am encouraged by the teams' play as tournament season approaches.”

The Hatters were led by senior Sam Ryder, who played a consistent round. He went out in 35 and played the back nine at even par 36 to finish with a one-under par 71. He was the only player for either team to break par.

Freshman Matt Taylor and sophomore Tyler White also played well. Both players finished with two-over par scores of 74. Taylor's round included a back nine score of 35.

Senior Micah Jacobsen rounded out the counters for Stetson, posting a three-over score of 75, while senior Andrew Schiano carded a 79.

The rest of the Stetson team played as individuals. Sophomore John Michael Boyle finished at nine-over par with an 81. Sophomore Ed Waller had an 82 and freshman Blake Snellings finished with an 85.

Lipscomb was led by Blanton Farmer, who finished at two-over par 74. The other Bison included Ryan Terry (79), Dustin Wilder (80), Paul Klein-Kracht (81) and Taylor Combs (83).

Stetson will open tournament play on Monday, February 27, in the Charleston Shootout in Charleston, SC. That event will be co-hosted by the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University.
