Daytona Beach, Fla. -- The Stetson women's cross country team finished in first place in the 5K race and the men placed second in the 8K race Saturday morning at the Embry-Riddle ASICS Classic in Daytona Beach.
It is the second year in a row the Hatter women finished first at Embry-Riddle.
"The women did really well," assistant coach Brian Sharbono said. "They defended their title from last year. It is a tough, challenging course, probably the toughest we are going to run all year. We ran a very solid race and we keep improving every week."
Clarissa Consol led the Hatter women and finished in third place overall with a time of 19:22. The top finisher in the women's race ran unattached, so Consol placed second among all university competitors.
Meanwhile, Adrienne DeVita finished right behind Consol in fourth place with a time of 19:41.
"It is a great feeling (to win)," DeVita said. "We won this meet last year, so our goal was to come in and defend as champions, and we did. Everyone did a really awesome job."
Also for Stetson, Amanda Spring placed eighth with a time of 20:01, Rachel Dumas placed ninth with a time of 20:11, Jessica Cosgrove placed 13th with a time of 20:38, Rachel Frankenberger placed 18th with a time of 20:55, Daniella Godenzi placed 25th with a time of 21:22, Trixi Menge placed 28th with a time of 21:30, Emily Nolan placed 48th with a time of 22:48, Susan Scaggs placed 55th with a time of 23:25, Connie Compton placed 59th with a time of 23:51, and Christine Iseley placed 65th with a time of 24:50.
Both teams competed on a difficult course that featured numerous changes in terrain and elevation.
"The men also did really well," Sharbono said. "We got a solid performance from everybody once again on a really tough course."
Joe Beery led the Hatter men and finished in 12th place over all with a time of 27:43. Drew Denson, meanwhile, placed 14th with a time of 27:51.
"I feel like I did all right today," Denson said. "I wasn't super-pleased with my performance, but I still have the motivation to go out there and do better next week on my home course in Titusville. They team did really well. I can see improvement overall, so I am excited to see where we go next."
