Morganton, NC – The Stetson women's golf team concluded its final tuneup prior to the 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Monday with a score of 307 in the second and final round at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.
The Hatters finished in fifth place, eight shots behind the hosts from Appalachian State. The Mountaineers posted a tournament low round of 299 on Monday to edge past Jacksonville State for a one-shot win.
“We lost by eight shots and, over two days, that is just a shot here and a shot there,” Hatters coach Floyd Kerr said. “Once again, we were very benevolent toward the golf course by making bogeys on holes that should be pars. It doesn't take many of those to knock you out of contention.”
The Hatters Giulia Vandenberg, who had a share of the individual lead after an even par round of 72 on Sunday, struggled in the final round, finishing with an 82 to drop into a tie for 19th place with a 10-over par score of 154.
Longwood's Courtney Tolton posted a second round score of 70 to take a one-shot victory over four other players.
Junior Kristine Odaiyar was the Hatters' top finisher, in a tie for 16th place, with a two-day score of 153. Sophomore's Paige Kemp and Eilidh Watson tied for 28th with a 13-over par score of 157 while fellow sophomore Carolin Schart finished tied for 36th with a 15-over par score of 159.
“We had to count a 79 again today, and that just doesn't get it done,” Kerr said. “If you asked the girls, they would tell you that they gave away too many easy shots. They are simple shots that we aren't making.”
The A-Sun Championship Tournament will open play on the Watson Course at the Reunion Resort near Kissimmee on Sunday.
