Stetson wins at the 1 and 4 seeds

DeLand, Fla. -- In the final match of the Stetson Spring Break Invitational, the ninth-ranked Hatters fell to No. 10 LSU 3-2 Sunday morning at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts.

Stetson (1-2) got wins from its 1 and 4 seeds, but a dramatic rally from the 3 seed came up a few points short.

At the 4 seed, Tiffany Creamer and Rachel Noble won their second match of the year, defeating Olivia Powers and Taylor Bradley 21-13, 21-17.

Stetson's 1 seed of Maggie Skjelbred and Sunniva Helland-Hansen fell behind 1-0 to LSU's Emma Allen and Ashley Allmer, but a 21-14 win in the second set and a hard-fought 15-13 victory in the final set gave the Norwegians their first match win of the year.

"It was super exciting," Skjelbred said after the match. "The last two sets were really good for us. We started to figure out what we needed to do to win."

"The key to the game was that we started to serve much tougher, and that put some pressure on the other team," Helland-Hansen said.

The 3 seed also went to third set, and LSU's Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss led Darby Dunn and Kristin Lind 14-11. The Hatters then scored three points in a row, including two on service aces by Dunn, to tie the set 14-14. LSU however, scored the final two points to earn the victory.

Stetson will travel to the west coast next week for two matches in California and four in Hawai'i. The Hatters will face Cal State LA and Long Beach State in Long Beach on Tuesday.
