Killen, Ala. – Stetson University senior Baylor Payne got hot in the second round of play in the TVA Credit Union Invitational on Monday and is tied for third going into Tuesday's final round.
 
Payne opened play on Monday at the Turtle Point Yacht & Golf Club with a fairly quiet one-under par 71. His round included two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars.
 
It was in the second round when Payne had more of a roller coaster ride. He opened with birdies on the first two holes before bogeys on holes four and six brought him back to even par. He got both of those shots back with an eagle on the par five seventh hole and then birdied the ninth before making the turn at three under for the round.
 
Two more birdies followed on the 10^th and 11^th holes to get him to five under for the round, but bogeys on 12 and 18 left him with a three-under par 69.
 
His two round total of four-under par 140 has him five shots behind the tournament leader, Morgan Egloff of Rollins College. Egloff had 11 birdies on the day against just two bogeys, both on the par four 12^th hole, and finished the day at nine-under par 135.
 
Jacksonville State has the team lead after rounds of 285 and 282. The Gamecocks' nine-under par total of 567 gives them a six shot lead over second place Arkansas Tech. Host North Alabama is in third place with an even par total of 576.
 
Stetson posted rounds of 303 and 302 on the day and will enter Tuesday's final round in eighth place in the nine-team field.
 
Besides Payne, Hatters' senior Tate Smith (78-74=152) is tied for 38^th overall, freshman Michael Sumner (80-77=157) is tied for 44^th in his first collegiate event while sophomore Jake Haas (78-81=159) is tied for 51^st. Freshman Carson Tewell (81-83=164) is tied for 57^th overall.
 
Play in the final round will begin with split tee times, off the first and 10^th holes, starting at 8 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday. The Hatters will begin play on the back nine and are paired with Savannah State and the UNA B team.
