Play in Hatter Classic to Begin on Monday

The Stetson women's golf team will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday when they host the Hatter Classic at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood.

Play in the event, which is scheduled for 54 holes, will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and conclude the event with a final 18 holes on Tuesday, also with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

The Hatter Classic returns this fall at a new venue after a five-year hiatus. First played in 1998 at the DeLand Country Club the event will be played at its fourth different venue.

Bordering up against the Wekiva State Park, Alaqua Country Club opened in 1988. The course was designed by Gary Player, who also built his home just off the third fairway. The course and facility were completely renovated in 2009 with more than $4 million invested in the property.

Not a typical Florida course, Alaqua is a regular stop on the PGA Senior Tour and, just last week, was the host site for the Symetra Tour's IOA Classic, which was won by Marta Sanz Barrio with a score of 13-under par 200 over 54 holes.

The field for the 2019 Hatter Classic includes McNeese State, the U.S. Naval Academy, Daytona State, Barry University, Lynn University, the Savannah College of Art & Design as well as Seminole State College.

All 10 Stetson players will compete in the event in two squads. The "A" squad includes seniors Justine Lauer and Erikah Neger, juniors Sarah May and Meghan McLean as well as freshman Wendy Hsiao. The "B" squad will include juniors Hanna Kiefer, Harlie Valinho and Emma McCloskey, sophomore Bianca Sol Cruz and freshman Katelyn David.

Stetson comes into the Hatter Classic having posted three consecutive top five finishes this fall. Players have posted 12 rounds with scores under par, with a low round of 68 by May in the final round last week at the Jacksonville Classic.

Stetson won the Hatter Classic each of the last seven times it was played, from 2007 to 2013, with each of those events played at Victoria Hills Country Club. Stetson has also had players earn medalist honors in the event four times, twice by Alexandria Buelow (2009 and 2011) once each by Sammi Smith (2012) and Danielle Shelburne, the Hatters head coach, in 2008.

For the Hatter Classic, Alaqua CC will play to a par of 72 over 5,986 yards. Live scoring for the tournament will be available through Golfstat.com.
