Estero, Fla. – After posting a pair of sub-300 rounds on the first day of the Homewood Suites FGCU Classic on Sunday, the Stetson men's golf team is within striking distance of the lead going into Monday's final round at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club.
 
Stetson opened play on Sunday with a 297 and followed up with a 295 in the second round. The Hatters are in third place, 10 shots behind Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) for second and 13 shots behind tournament leading Saint Joseph's (Pa.).
 
The Hatters were led on Sunday by freshman Mason Quagliata who, despite significant issues in the first round, came back with an almost flawless one-under par 71 in the second round. His opening round 77 included three birdies, three bogeys and back-to-back holes at the end of the front nine with a double-bogey followed by a triple-bogey. In his second round, he played the same holes with a par and a birdie.
 
Quagliata is tied for 12^th entering Monday's final round.
 
Senior Chris Williard and sophomore Ben Resnick are both one shot behind Qualiata, tied for 15^th, both at five-over par for the day.
 
Williard opened with a solid 73, a round that included 17 pars. The only mark against him was a bogey on the 16^th hole. He opened his second round with a birdie and was even when he reached the par five eighth hole. A triple there was a setback, but he bounced back with birdies on 11 and 12 before a rough stretch through 14-15-16 with two bogeys and a double. A birdie on the 17^th hole left him with a 76 in the second round.
 
Resnick turned in a flawless opening round 70 that included birdies on the second and 14^th holes to go with 16 pars. His second round didn't go as smoothly with a four-over par stretch through the first five holes. Three more bogeys left him with a 79.
 
Sophomore Carson Tewell is tied for 19^th after his rounds of 77 and 73. Fellow sophomore Michael Sumner is in 33^rd place after rounds of 80 and 75.
 
Stetson also has two individual players in the event. Freshman Jon Lumley had rounds of 78 and 81 and is tied for 38^th place and Bradley Goldstein is 44^th after rounds of 84 and 78.
 
Richard Riva of Saint Joseph's has the tournament lead at two-under par. He had rounds of 70 and 72, but is just one shot in front of five players who are tied for second at one-under par.
 
The Hatters will play with the two teams they are chasing in the final round of the tournament on Monday. Stetson, UTRGV and Saint Joseph's will have tee times beginning at 8:18 a.m.
