Hatters Set to Open Spring Season Saturday

As COVID-19 ravages schedules and athletic programs across the country, Stetson women's soccer, under second-year head coach Chris Bergmann, remains committed to building a winning program, both on and off the field.

The Hatters are currently scheduled to open the season on Saturday, February 13, when they will take on the visiting Eagles of Georgia Southern. Though this season will largely focus on health and safety with so many COVID-19 regulations, Bergmann took advantage of the unique offseason to strengthen the character of his team.

"Things happen for a reason, and we are not going to miss an opportunity to grow our team," Bergmann said. "Our comradery, even during this time when we cannot really interact, is fantastic – how we are caring for one another and putting the team first. It is an exciting time."

The Hatters will field a revamped roster this season, with 15 newcomers, including 11 freshman and four transfer students entering the fold.

"We are a new team," Bergmann said. "We have gone untested, so it is going to be really good to get out on the field soon."

The Hatters finished 2-13-2 a season ago. This season, they were picked to finish seventh in the ASUN Conference in the annual conference coaches' poll.

Forward Maggie Struble took up much of the spotlight for the Hatters in her freshman season. She led the team with seven goals, earning a spot on the 2019 ASUN All-Freshmen team. Bergmann expects big things from the sophomore this season.

"She understands now what it takes to be successful," he said. "We expect her to continue where she left off."

Struble figures to be only part of the story for Stetson's scoring unit this season. Bergmann noted that forwards Chloe Washington, Delaney Peery, Lily Truong, and Jackie Fiacco will each play a large role in the Hatters offense this season, with plenty of support behind them at midfield.

"We have more weapons now," Bergmann said. "Our mids now also have great range, from Erin McRae, to Pernilla Westergren, to Telma Sif Buadottir, to Lily Truong. We've got a lot of productive players."

Bergmann and the Hatters are particularly excited about their goalkeeping room this season. Freshmen Ashleigh Wise and Emily VanGundy, as well as junior transfer Zoe Welsh have shown potential leading up to the season.

"This is probably one of the most athletic goalkeeping groups that we have worked with," Bergmann said. "They just grind and train so hard. We expect very big things from them."

Despite a season with so much uncertainty. Bergmann's approach to each match has not wavered.

"We make sure the constant variables are that we are the hardest working team all the time and that we will do everything we can to make our teammates around us better," Bergmann said. "Do your job. Do it to the best of your ability. We expect that out of everyone."

Above all else, the Hatters are committed to winning with the right attitude. Bergmann is excited for his team's potential this season.

"We are going to win the right way," he said. "If we are healthy and strong, we are going to have magic happen this year. I look forward to this opportunity to test ourselves and embrace the adversity. Things are going to go our way with how hard we work."

The spring season gets underway this weekend.
