Hatters Show Progress in Final Round at Old Corkscrew

Estero, Fla. – After posting a pair of team scores on Monday at 300 and 301, the Stetson men's golf team closed out the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a round of 296 to finish in a tie for eighth in the 12-team event.

The tournament was hosted by Florida Gulf Coast and included four of the ASUN teams the Hatters will face next week at the ASUN Championship.

The host Eagles built a commanding lead on Monday, posting rounds of 286 and 283, taking a 10-stroke lead over Jacksonville into today's final round. FGCU proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field, putting together a team score of 17 under par to win the tournament by 24 shots.

Jacksonville finished second with a three-round total of even par. Future ASUN member Jacksonville State finished third.

Despite the sizable margin of victory for the Eagles, FGCU was unable to sweep the trophy ceremony. High Point's Brandon Einstein took medalist honors by one shot over FGCU's Austin Cherichella, backing up his second round 68 yesterday with a final round 69 on Tuesday.

Behind Cherichella, FGCU players also finished third and tied for fourth.

Stetson's best finisher was graduate transfer Nick Montes, who finished tied for 16th with a six-over par score of 222. After opening the tournament with a 76, Montes posted consecutive rounds of 73.

Montes was followed by Chris Williard, who tied for 25th with a total of 224. Freshman Truman Keppy entered the final round with a chance to earn a top 10 finish, but he closed the tournament with an 83 to finish tied for 42nd.

Mason Quagliata finished tied for 52nd while Benjamin Resnick finished tied for 59th. Ryan Peters, who played in the tournament as an individual, finished tied for 65th.

The Hatters will close out the 2021 season starting on Sunday when they open play in the ASUN Championship. The event is being held this year at the University of Georgia Course in Athens, Ga.
