DELAND, Fla. – In preparation for the upcoming 2022-23 academic season, Stetson University men's tennis coach Christophe Noblet has announced a second recruit, Juan Jose Rodriguez, will be joining the Hatters this fall.
Rodriguez, a native of Madrid, Spain, comes to Stetson from Lamar University, where he played one season for the Red Birds and helped them to a 17-8 overall mark, the Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship and WAC postseason tournament finals appearance.
During the spring year, Rodriguez went 13-7 overall in singles matches, which included an 11-5 mark at flight 2 and a 1-0 at flight 1. In doubles matches, his overall record was 11-7 and included an 8-6 record at No. 1 doubles, paired with Daniel Sancho Arbizu. As a duo, they were voted to the All-WAC Second Team, while Rodriguez earned All-WAC Second Team honors as a singles player.
"Juan won a lot of matches for Lamar this past season, in both singles and doubles," Noblet said. "More impressively, he did it as a freshman playing primarily at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. The experience he amassed this year will serve him well as he transitions to Stetson and helps us accomplish our goals. We are excited for him to join the Hatters Family."
Stetson, which made the ASUN Championship postseason tournament, will be looking to replace six Hatters who depart due to graduation. However, the stable isn't barren as three Hatters returning were named to the ASUN's All-Freshman Team, including Freshman of the Year Tristan Dumas.
