Maftei Wins Consolation Title, Durrer/Lorenzetti Capture Doubles Crown at Bedford Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. — Stetson men's tennis wrapped up competition at the Bedford Cup at the USTA National Campus on Sunday, closing the weekend with a pair of titles and several strong performances across singles and doubles play.

Mihnea Maftei finished the tournament by winning the B Singles Draw consolation title, while Gian Durrer and James Lorenzetti captured the Doubles Third Draw championship in an all-Stetson final.

Durrer opened Sunday with a dominant performance in the B Singles Draw consolation semifinals, defeating West Florida's William Meyering 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the final.

That set up an all-Hatter championship match against Maftei. Durrer took the opening set 6-2 before Maftei responded to force a deciding super tiebreak. Maftei completed the comeback, winning 2-6, 7-6 (1), 10-1 to claim the consolation title.

Stetson was also guaranteed a doubles championship entering the final day, with Durrer and Lorenzetti facing teammates Christian Kuehne and Lukas Janousek in the Doubles Third Draw final. Durrer and Lorenzetti came away with a 6-2 victory to secure the title.

"Overall this was a weekend that saw some good highlights," Associate Head Coach John Shade said. "It was good to see Keoni reach the A Draw singles semifinal and have two teams make a doubles final against each other, with Gian and James getting the win. We are looking forward to improving and to our next tournament."

The weekend began with several strong individual performances for the Hatters.

Keoni Puig McCallan produced Stetson's deepest run in the top singles draw. After receiving an opening-round walkover, Puig McCallan defeated Florida Atlantic's Simon Myslivec 6-2, 6-4 before rallying past South Florida's Ashton McLeod 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the quarterfinals. His run ended in the A Draw semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to South Florida's Guglielmo Verdese.

Lorenzetti also picked up a main-draw singles victory, defeating West Florida's William Meyering 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 before pushing North Florida's Joao Portugal to a deciding match tiebreak in the following round.

Janousek earned a three-set victory over West Florida's Vicente Couto, winning 6-3, 1-6, 10-5, before falling in a pair of tiebreak sets to FGCU's Gabriel Valdes.

Maftei bounced back from a narrow opening-round defeat to West Florida's Jean Deloziere with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over North Florida's Gabriel Piqueras in the back draw before ultimately taking home the consolation championship.

Kuehne battled Florida Atlantic's Marek Pazdera in his opening singles match, taking the first set before falling in a deciding match tiebreak. Durrer also competed in the main draw, dropping a closely contested match to West Florida's Mark Neyelov before responding with his strong consolation run.

The Hatters collected multiple doubles victories throughout the tournament as well. Puig McCallan and Alexandre Bergeron defeated Florida Atlantic's Lucca Pignaton and Jose David Segovia 6-2, while Durrer and Lorenzetti opened with a 7-5 win over FGCU's Christopher Smith and Gustav Hasslegren. Kuehne and Janousek also earned a 6-4 victory over West Florida's Bastian Zamora and Vicente Couto.

Durrer and Lorenzetti later advanced to the doubles final with another 7-5 victory over West Florida's Mark Neyelov and Goncalo Quintela before defeating Kuehne and Janousek for the championship.

Stetson leaves Orlando with a doubles title, a singles consolation title and a semifinal appearance in the top singles draw as the Hatters continue their fall schedule.
