DeLAND, Fla. — The Stetson men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season Sunday with another strong performance at the Mad Hatter Invitational, winning three of four singles matches and two of three doubles contests against Xavier at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters concluded the three-day event with 17 victories across singles and doubles, highlighted by a perfect showing in doubles through the opening two days.
Stetson entered Sunday's finale following a sweep of all seven contested matches against Kennesaw State on Saturday and a five-win performance against Embry-Riddle on Friday. The Hatters carried that momentum into their final competition of the semester, adding five more victories to close the weekend.
In doubles action Sunday, Keoni Puig-McCallan and Kartik Mandla continued their impressive run together, defeating Xavier's Bode Campbell and Lukas Grossman 7-5 at the top position. The victory completed a perfect 3-0 weekend for the pairing, which also earned wins against Embry-Riddle and Kennesaw State.
Christian Kuehne and Lukas Janousek also finished the tournament unbeaten as a doubles team, securing a 6-3 victory over Max Pettingell and Samuel Frizelle. The duo won all three of its matches during the weekend, building on its main draw doubles championship at the Samford Invite in late October.
Gian Durrer and Alexandre Bergeron battled Xavier's Andrew Spurck and Nick Herdoiza in the third doubles position but came up short, falling 7-5. The pairing finished the weekend 2-1 after earning victories against Embry-Riddle and Kennesaw State.
The Hatters followed with another productive showing in singles, led by victories from Puig-McCallan, Kuehne and Durrer.
Puig-McCallan continued his strong weekend at the top singles position, defeating Campbell 6-0, 6-1. The Stetson sophomore controlled the match throughout, surrendering just one game to finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 singles record. His weekend also included a three-set comeback against Embry-Riddle's Joao Morgado on Friday and a straight-set victory over Kennesaw State's Dominic Ducariu on Saturday.
Kuehne added another singles victory against Xavier's Max Pettingell in one of Sunday's most competitive matches. After dropping the opening set 7-5, Kuehne responded with a 6-3 victory in the second before prevailing 10-6 in the deciding tiebreak. The result gave Kuehne his second singles win of the weekend after he earned a victory by retirement against Kennesaw State's Nathan Walters on Saturday.
Durrer capped off an impressive three-day stretch with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Xavier's Nick Herdoiza. After edging out a tightly contested opening set, Durrer took control in the second to secure his third consecutive singles victory. He finished the tournament unbeaten in singles play, adding wins over Embry-Riddle's Frederic Tu and Kennesaw State's Xavi Ferrer earlier in the weekend.
Janousek also competed in singles Sunday, facing Xavier's Samuel Frizelle. After a competitive three-set battle, Frizelle earned the victory in a deciding tiebreak. Janousek finished the weekend with a singles victory against Kennesaw State and contributed to all three of Stetson's doubles wins alongside Kuehne.
Saturday's competition provided one of the highlights of the weekend as Stetson swept all three doubles matches and all four contested singles matches against Kennesaw State.
Puig-McCallan and Mandla opened doubles play with a 6-3 victory over Ducariu and Juan Parrilla, while Kuehne and Janousek defeated Kyvan Rietkerk and Ben Hudson. Durrer and Bergeron completed the sweep with a 7-6 (6) win against Ferrer and Walters.
In singles, Puig-McCallan defeated Ducariu 6-4, 6-4, Janousek cruised past Hudson 6-2, 6-2 and Durrer earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ferrer. Kuehne rounded out the singles sweep when Walters retired with Kuehne leading 3-2 in the second set after dropping the opening set 7-5.
The Hatters began the tournament Friday against Embry-Riddle, sweeping all three doubles matches before splitting four singles contests. Puig-McCallan overcame an opening-set loss to defeat Morgado 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Durrer added a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tu.
Across the three days, Stetson finished with an 8-1 record in doubles and a 9-3 mark in singles. Puig-McCallan and Durrer each went undefeated in singles, while all three doubles pairings earned multiple victories during the weekend.
"It was great to finish strongly on the last day of our fall invitational," Associate Head Coach John Shade said. "I was proud of the guys for their intensity and for how hard we competed in both singles and doubles."
The Mad Hatter Invitational concludes a productive fall campaign for Stetson, which competed at several tournaments throughout the Southeast. The Hatters' fall was highlighted by Kuehne capturing both the singles and doubles main draw championships at the Samford Invite, Mihnea Maftei winning the B Draw singles consolation title at the Bedford Cup and Durrer teaming with James Lorenzetti to claim a doubles title at the same event.
Stetson will now turn its attention toward the spring dual-match season following a fall that featured multiple individual championships and strong performances against regional competition.
